If we become smaller or larger, our shadow does too. We can do the same with our carbon footprint. It can become smaller or larger, but we cannot eliminate it.
Concretely, our carbon footprint is the amount of CO2 (or other greenhouse gases) that goes into the atmosphere as a result of our activities. Everytime we move from one place to another, eat, work out, order food, shop, shower, or even when we watch a movie, there’s a certain amount of CO2 that will end up in the atmosphere.
